The House of David — Cult of the Week

The House of David was founded in 1903 in Benton Harbor, Michigan by Benjamin and Mary Purnell. A most unusual group of devoted Christian celibates who funded their commune by creating a hotel, amusement park, traveling baseball team, and an orchestra that has played for several Presidents in Washington. Consumate showmen, artisans, craftsmen and women the group enjoyed enormous financial success. They even had an exhibit at the Chicago Century of Progress World’s Fair in 1935-36. Oh yes, and the men didn’t cut their hair.
