Five fun facts about Hedy Lamarr:
As well as being an actress, Hedy was also a scientist and inventor, and she co-invented an early form of spread spectrum communications technology, which is now used as the basis for WiFi and the technology used in some cordless telephones.
Hedy is short for Hedwig
Her first husband was extremely controlling and was also a part-Jewish Nazi sympathiser who entertained both Mussolini and Hitler at his grand parties in Vienna. In 1937 Hedy hired a maid who resembled herself, drugged the maid and stole her uniform as a disguise, then fled Austria for Paris to escape and divorce him.
On one occasion when running away from her fascist first husband, she hid in a brothel and when her husband came to search the place, a man entered the room and she had sex with him so she could remain hidden.
She was arrested for shoplifting twice, in 1965 and 1991 (she was 75).
