Not Quite Hollywood…. quite.

What a film.  I haven’t seen a documentary for years that I would give 5 stars to — not since I was a film critic in another life — and certainly not one that thrilled me as much as ‘Not Quite Hollywood’.

It’s about genre film in Australia in the 1970’s and ‘80’s.  Don’t be put off by that, I’ve never seen most of the movies it references either.  I was an ‘80’s John Hughes teen, what can I say?  Not that my life was actually like that in any way, but I digress. 

‘Not Quite Hollywood’, is about bawdy exozpoloitation.  Sexpoitation, horror, action.. Who knew Australian films were that fucking good back then?  There’s a difference between Hollywood and Australian films you see… and it’s called budget. CGi wasn’t invented and stunt men were called “mad dog” for good reason.  Real bullets were shot at actors and people were killed.

Now, shall we talk about the nudity?  You want tits and ass?  How about cock?  I couldn’t think of a non-actual porn film featuring more… but always in context.  It was the times, you see.  But really, Wicked Knickers has got nothing on this lot…

It’s a trip.. it’s psychedelic and one hell of a ride. 

Oh, and if I didn’t have a whole new appreciation for Quentin Tarantino after ‘Inglorious Basterds’, this cemented it.  He appears frequently and his love for Australian genre cinema is genuine and vast. You know that is true when he rips off scenes, right?  You’d be surprised.  What a fucking legend.
